What GITEX Nigeria 2026 Means for AI Startups and Tech Jobs in Nigeria

I have monitored the Nigerian tech scene for a while now, and I can tell you that GITEX Nigeria 2026 is a new experience in the tech conference circuit. This isn't just another tech enthusiast's event. The statistics speak for themselves, and they are ones that every AI entrepreneur and tech enthusiast in Nigeria should do his or her homework on.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presided over the second edition of GITEX Nigeria in Abuja and Lagos, which was held from August 31st to September 3rd, 2026. This theme was called ‘Beyond Connectivity, The Bridge to Sovereign Innovation,' and this is more of an expression than it appears on the surface.
The Investor Access I Have Not Seen Before
The big thing for me that came to mind while at GITEX Nigeria 2026 was the amount of capital walked in the door. The gathering in Lagos was attended by over 200 investors with combined assets of over $200 billion. There were more than 90 countries involved in the registrations. I have held Nigeria start-up events before, but the amount of international investor interest at this level is new.
When Trixie LohMirmand, GITEX Global CEO, said that the event was intended to “squeeze years of business networking into days," it was her way of putting it. This is a game-changer for Nigerian AI entrepreneurs who have been denied entry to serious capital. With support from the Mastercard Foundation, nine startups from Lebanon were selected to come to Lagos. From one, the number of companies participating from Moscow has increased to twenty-three. Canada's list of companies went from 0 to 9.
The talent pipeline is real, but the test is conversion.
I must point out something; I'm not a liar. Nigeria also has one of Africa's biggest pools of technology talent, and its 3 Million Technical Talent programme resulted in 1.87 million registrations in all 774 local government areas. Learning has reached over 135,000 Nigerians so far, and with the support of community resources, over 300,000 have been reached across three cohorts.
However, I think every AI founder should sit with NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, who pointed out the following. For Nigeria's economic future, he said, it is all about harnessing the human intelligence, creativity, and problem-solving skills into economic values. The 3MTT program has created 15,000 job and opportunity pathways so far. That is a beginning, but I think the key indicator will be the number of those who are trained who go on to build AI products that generate revenue and create more jobs.
The Startup Pitchathon will be held in conjunction with Meta's AI Academy. The Startup Pitchathon will take place alongside Meta's AI Academy.
A significant step connected to the GITEX Nigeria 2026 was the introduction of a new initiative: AI Academy Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. A notable move was the introduction of a new initiative in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, called AI Academy Nigeria. The Startup Pitchathon was part of this initiative that provided early-stage startups of Nigeria a direct platform at GITEX.
A total of 10 startups were shortlisted to present their pitches at GITEX Nigeria on 3rd September 2026. The two winners took home $5,000 worth of equity-free investment and $2,000 in Meta advertising credits. They have also won an all expenses paid package to represent Nigeria at the AI Summit hosted by Meta in Istanbul in November 2026.
I believe this is important, as it will provide a visible route from local training to international exposure. For a long time, Nigerian entrepreneurs of artificial intelligence (AI) have had brilliant concepts but lacked a connecting link to global platforms. The participation of private sector players like Meta, RAIN, and NCAIR indicates that the private sector is ready to invest in that bridge too.
Startups in the education sector have been gaining momentum. Education startups are booming.
I can't write about AI startups without also writing about the underlying technology that they utilize. According to NITDA's Abdullahi, President Tinubu has approved Project BRIGHT for laying 90,000 kilometers of fiber-optic infrastructure in Nigeria, as well as the expansion of cloud and computing services to startups.
Project BRIDGE is projected to provide up to 20,000 direct employment opportunities, over 150,000 indirect employment opportunities, and train 5,000 Nigerian youths while driving internet penetration over 70%. This infrastructure investment isn't luxurious for AI companies that need large amounts of data and computing power. It's the base.
The implications for tech jobs are clear. The upshots of this for tech jobs are obvious.
So, I am with the jobs question here. The immediate job creation from GITEX-related initiatives, I believe, is significant, but the actual job creation will be from the AI start-ups that scale. In any successful AI company that develops a product in agriculture, healthcare, financial services, or education, there will be engineers, product managers, data scientists, and sales and support staff.
The worries of stakeholders expressed at GITEX are legitimate. Nigeria needs to translate its investments in AI into local innovations, startups, exports, and employment opportunities. As LohMirmand said, “When you start to create AI, then you are a superpower."
I share that view. GITEX Nigeria 2026 has set the stage for the linkages, investment risk, and skill development opportunities. Next, it will come down to whether those encounters are translated into commercial connections—or another conference.
