Telegram or WhatsApp which is more suitable for business use
I've used both, but I think WhatsApp or Telegram, which is better for business use, is superior.
BY TEMO
I have already tried both Telegram and WhatsApp for work and can tell you that it is not that easy to decide on one of them. It will depend on the type of work you are doing and who you need to contact. I want to dissect what the true differences are so you can know which one you can use in your workflow.
The Reach Question
In this part of the world, Nigeria, WhatsApp is all around. The rankings never change: WhatsApp Messenger is #1, WhatsApp Business is #2, and Telegram is #4. Where there are clients, customers, or people outside your circle of team members, WhatsApp is all about reach. From FX trading and vendor coordination, I cannot count the number of Nigerian businesses running via WhatsApp groups. I need to contact someone; they have WhatsApp.
Telegram has another power: You can send messages without giving away your phone number. A username can be used in place of. To me, that's important when working with a group of people I haven't met before or in a large professional group, where I don't want everyone to have my personal phone number.
The Security Reality
I have to admit that lots of people get this wrong. By default, all WhatsApp messages are encrypted end-to-end. Telegram does not. The only thing that is end-to-end encrypted is its "Secret Chats" function, and you must manually choose which conversations to turn on end-to-end encryption for. Regular Telegram chats are stored on their cloud servers.
The Telegram CEO has publicly attacked WhatsApp for misleading users on the encryption front, citing cloud backups as a vulnerability. It's true to some extent. By default, WhatsApp does not encrypt backups, but you can do so if you choose. However, the core messages are cryptically encoded, whereas default chats are not.
For work, it's when you discuss sensitive information about your client or information that's confidential, you get protection by default with WhatsApp. You'll need to consider it and activate Secret Chats every time you use Telegram.
Share files and store data.
Here Telegram beats me, though. While both apps have a 2GB file transfer, Telegram Premium doubles that to 4GB. Most importantly, Telegram is cloud-based. All my files, all my messages, all my documents—synced in real time across all devices. If I lost that phone, I would lose all my history, unless I have backups of it stored on another phone.
Telegram's cloud sync is absolutely amazing when it comes to work. Can initiate a conversation from my cell phone and carry on through my laptop without losing a beat. While the function now enables up to four devices to be linked together, it remains more stifling than WhatsApp.
Groups and Communities
The members of WhatsApp groups are limited to 1024. Telegram groups can hold 200,000. There are also Telegram channels, which allow you to send messages to an unlimited number of subscribers.
For those that have to manage a big group of staff and run a community or send updates to numerous customers, Telegram is clearly the superior choice. I've noticed some crypto communities, developer groups, and big projects coordinating using Telegram, which is excellent. For smaller, tighter teams, WhatsApp is the better option.
Business Tools
WhatsApp Business has been designed for customer-oriented tasks. You get a business profile, catalog, quick replies, and automated messages. The Business API integrates with CRMs and eCommerce platforms and needs approval from Meta but is still available at a cost.
Telegram has a different approach. It has a free and open Bot API. No permission or templates are required for creating custom bots. I've come across Telegram bots that have been used for customer service and order tracking. It's quite flexible but requires technical skills and/or a developer to configure.
What I Recommend
For most of the professional and small businesses in Nigeria, I will advise WhatsApp as the primary tool they should use. It's where your clients are. Encrypts automatically. The Business app provides handy features without a complicated interface.
However, Telegram is also good for certain applications, so I suggest using it for that too. When there are large project teams, a lot of files are involved in cooperation or any work that can be supported by the automation of bots. I have discovered that many have used both, and it is not a sin.
The secret lies in knowing the strengths of each tool. WhatsApp for everyone and for the default security. Telegram for scale, storage, and flexibility. Use the right tool for the right job and you will operate at a higher level of efficiency.
